Connective Tissue Massage

Prof. Alfredo Pietroluongo

Face and Body
A good vascularisation and oxygenation of the dermis is indispensable for keeping the skin young.

There are a series of transformations that affect the dermis at the same time as the regeneration of the epidermis. These include the proliferation of collagen and elastin, which ensure an increase in skin thickness and an improvement in its turgor. An increase in substances such as protoglycans and glycoseaminoglycans ensures a hydrating effect in the skin that is more similar to that found in younger skins.

These conditions also provide a correct, physiological balance between oxygenation, the production of free radicals, and the action of anti-oxidant substances.

Vigorous regeneration of the skin is the key to keeping it in good health. Children’s skin is marvellous for this very reason.

On the other hand, excessive exposure to the sun’s rays, and all factors that reduce irrigation and the dermis’ metabolism:

  • A sedentary lifestyle;
  • Smoking cigarettes;
  • Cold;
  • Arterial spasms brought on by stress;
  • Metabolic pathologies;
  • Hypertension; and,
  • Atherosclerosis

These slow down the regenerative processes, enhancing hyperkeratosis and an aging appearance.

One should also remember that under the conditions indicated above, which are associated with poor blood circulation, one also finds an excess of free radicals. The organic defence mechanisms against these (endogenous antioxidants) may weaken too much to the point of not allowing them to act at full efficiency.

All processes that counteract the phenomena linked to aging of the skin are aimed at increasing vascularisation, which is the regenerative turnover of the epidermis.

The VACUUM MASSAGE is definitively important to reactivate the deepest layers of the skin (DERMIS with its active substances) without using invasive methods and making a gym for the muscles. Thanks to the calibrated and graduable vacuum massage on the face and the body, the OXY MEGASTATION can finally offer a STRONG alternative to mesotherapy and liposuction (or they can be a complement to the liposuction).

Fat and cellulite are caused by “islands” of fat cells forming in the upper layers of the skin. While exercise, diet and surgical procedures such as liposuction can be used to reduce accumulated fat in the deeper layers of the skin, cellulite is resistant to best efforts at the gym and body sculpting by liposuction surgery. VACUUM therapy is a reasonablyPAINLESS, SAFE, and EFFECTIVE way of reducing the orange peel appearance of skin where cellulite accumulates. The target is the connective tissue, the real living material that can, under the action of aspirated skin folds, be restructured, thus stimulating venous and lymphatic circulation, making fat available for lipolysis, or breakdown.

Vacuum Connective Tissue Massage
Skin aæsthetics are often compromised by various factors that affect consistency, firmness and elasticity. Sadly, the imperfections that result are well known and include sagging, cellulite accumulation, double chin, localized adiposis, stretch-marks and edemas.

Current studies in tissue physiology have placed more and more emphasis on the role of connective tissue in keeping skin looking good. Connective tissue exists right from under the basal epidermis membrane and continues into the dermis and right up to the hypodermis without any clear break.

It is made up of fibrous and elastic extracellular fibres (collagen), produced by cellular elements (fibroblasts) that form a vast network inside a viscous substance that is rich in mucopolysaccharides (glycosamin or glycanes). This is known as the Fundamental Substance in which the various vital exchanges take place.

Other essential elements in connective tissue are mucous, elastic and adipose tissues. The tissue is crossed by a network of blood vessels and fibres that carry nourishment and connect its functions to the rest of the body. The functions of connective tissue are conditioned by the properties of the extracellular materials. Its fibres are responsible for tension resistance and elasticity.

The watery phase of the Fundamental Substance is a necessary stage between the connective tissue and the blood through which all the nutritional substances and waste must pass. The consistency and degree of moisturisation of the connective tissue can have a profound influence on these vital exchanges.

The fibroblasts are fixed connective tissue cells that process the precursors of the fibrillar elements that make up the collagen and elastic fibres. When stimulated, they increase in volume, as happens during the wound healing process or when the constituents of the Fundamental Substance are condensed.

Any treatment that attempts to counter these imperfections must take into account the need to stimulate the connective system, to begin with by improving the back and forward flow of the fluids regulated by the capillaries.

These are the principles that the medical staff working with Maya for the beauty sector have been focusing on. To perfect an innovative system for improving skin flaws by concentrating on the use of small blood vessels through the stimulation of the connective tissue elements.

Two innovative hand-pieces with a range of different heads have been specially designed to increase the flow of oxygenated blood and nourishment to the tissue being treated and to aid the removal of liquids carrying waste.

This suction effect on the outer surface layers of the skin attempts to free the layers below and activate the flow of fluids and oxygenated blood. Every connective element, including the adipose tissue, is affected by this non-compression massage procedure, which encourages both the flow of new nutritional elements and the removal of waste.

Oxygenated blood is sucked from the smaller arteries, while the centripetal movement of the hand-piece exercises a vacuum action on the surface vein system. The part of the probe that comes into contact with the skin has been designed with a series of perforations leading to a single vacuum chamber. The series of vacuum outlets form a communicative system that creates a level of tension parallel to the epidermis and thus provides a constant vacuum without causing any form of trauma or collapse.

For all the above reasons, we consider vacuuming as the first stage of any good aesthetical treatment. This is the standard protocol all treatments should begin with.

Aspiration is designed to increase circulation and bring new life and energy to the area being treated. This process is intended to draw the blood to the surface of the skin without breaking the capillaries.

The aspiration process on which the MAYA units are based consists of a gradual reddening of the skin from blood that is being brought closer to the surface.

As we said above, our epidermis does not have its autonomous capillary structure because there are no capillary vessels present in this layer. It is fed with the oxygen coming from the capillary vessels present in the underlying layer, the dermis. This feeding process works by diffusion and not by a proper contact with the blood present in the capillary vessels.

If we wish to supply nourishment and aliment to this tissue, we have to provide for the vascularization of the same tissue. A good vacuuming has the important aim to vascularize and therefore feed the first layer of skin tissue. A good vacuuming will last at least 10 minutes and causing a light reddening of the skin. It means that the blood has been called to the surface thus supplying oxygenation, vitality, power and energy to the epidermal cells.

Face probe

This special probe can be used in order to improve, accelerate and optimize the results, allowing the operator to stimulate the underlying foundation of connective tissue, thus firming, toning and smoothing the face.

How does the face probe work?
Aging, the face skin loses its elasticity and the face may become affected by wrinkles and adipose distention of the skin (e.g. jowls or double chin).

The stimulation of the face through the vacuum connective tissue massage improves the skin quality, increases local microcirculation, frees the epidermis from dead cells and strengthen the dermis of the face. Moreover it stimulates the fibroblasts in the production of collagen, fibrin and elastin, thus improving the skin’s elasticity.

The connective tissue massage performed with this special vacuum probe helps to restore the trophicity of connective tissue and moreover contributes to the reduction of wrinkles and localized fat pads.

One probe, two heads: a specific answer to each specific problem!
The face probe for the face connective tissue massage is equipped with two different heads. Each head has been specifically designed to treat a certain kind of skin conditions and areas of our faces, thus slowing the operator to personalize the treatment for each client.

The head, equipped with groves and balls, has been specifically designed to treat bigger and flatter areas, such as forehead, full face and neck.

The other head, equipped only with balls, can work in a more focused way and has been designed to treat small area, such as nose, bags under the eyes, etc.

What happens in our skin?
The vacuum has the ability to treat the underlying structure of the skin to firm, lift and contour. As we know the epidermis has no capillary vessels and is nourished “by diffusion” by the dermis. The aging process slows down.

The vacuum allows us to stimulate this process, affecting oxygen, nutrition, blood and energy. In this way we are able to stimulate and to revitalize those areas which are not oxygenated and nourished well enough.

What are the results?

  • Freshness, firmness and tonus of the face
  • Improvement of firmness and texture of the skin in general
  • Improvement of the blood circulation (about 4 times more blood flowed to the treated area)
  • Improvement of the lymph circulation (about 5 times more lymphatic fluids flowed away)
  • Improvement of the toxins, abnormal water buildup and fatty waste elimination
  • Modification of the face shape
  • Redefinition of the jaw line, removal of the bags under the eyes and the double chin.
  • Improvement of the Intercellular interchanges
  • Skin elasticity improvement
  • Stimulation of the production of collagen and elastin
  • Improvement in the appearance of scar tissue and burns
  • Connective tissue lifting and toning
  • Improvement of the suppleness of the skin
  • Exfoliation of the upper layer of the skin (dead cells removal)

Which areas can be treated?
The face connective tissue massage can be performed on face, neck, decollete and hands to strengthen the skin’s natural support and to improve skin’s texture and elasticity.

How can the client get faster and better results?
It is important to teach your client how to prevent and combat the aging process. Aging is a natural process, but adopting healthy life habits can be of great help in the war on the signs of aging. First of all remind your clients to always protect the skin from the sun with an appropriated SPF factors.

Secondly suggest to them to follow a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, which are rich in vitamins, especially A, C and E, which are high in natural anti-oxidants. Smoke should be avoided. Moderate and regular fitness activity will help to maintain all of the body in perfect function.

Treatments: how often? how many? how long?
The average number of treatments is twice a week (more than two sessions per week will not bring faster results). The recommended average number of treatment is 12. The first results are visible after 1 to 6 sessions. Each session lasts 15/20 minutes circa. The operator will focus attention on the problematic areas, moreover a complete body treatment will be performed in order to stimulate general circulation and elimination.

Who can benefit from the treatment ?
This is a non-invasive, non ablative procedure, which has almost no side effects. All those clients who have wrinkles, fine lines, photo-damaged skin and whose skin suffers for lack of elasticity, consistency and oxygen can benefit from this treatment.

Moreover the vacuum connective tissue massage, combined with draining movements, can be used also to combat double chin, puffiness and bags under the eyes.

Body Probe

Activating connective tissue, achieved by manipulating the skin, and activating fluids restored by negative pressure (vacuum), the connective tissue is stimulated, enriched by cosmetics active principles, it revitalizes the cells responsible for producing plastic skin elements, such as fibrin, elastin, collagen and glycosaminoglycans.

What is cellulite?
First of all we have to consider that there are many factors which play an important role when we speak about cellulite; such as, physique, lifestyle, habits, smoke, skin tone, age, diet factors, exercise, hormonal imbalance and proper hydration.

Some of the reasons why people develop cellulite are weight gain, genetic predisposition, and inevitable hormone changes throughout life. These factors cause an increase of the fat cells in the subcutaneous fat layer up to 300 times their original size. In this way they stick together inside the pockets in which they are enclosed.

What happens in this case it that the pocket is stretched upward and at the same time the fibers in-between the pockets are strained, the result of this situation is that the circulation is inhibited and toxins and water are trapped. This is what we call cellulite.

Some say cellulite is normal fat that has overflowed the honeycomb structure, called connective tissue, which acts like a tether holding it together beneath the skin, and that the tell-tale dimples form when the overflowing fat rises to the surface.

Other say the dimples are caused by the tether-like threads of the honeycomb shortening over time and pulling the skin inward. What is sure is that cellulite consists of pockets full of “fat-gone-wrong” that act like sponges, absorbing 300 times more fat and fluids.

We can undergo diet, exercise and surgical procedures such as liposculpture but they will reduce only the fat accumulated in the deeper layers of the skin.

Cellulite will remain because it is resistant to all of our efforts. The connective body vacuum massage is a safe, reasonably painless and effective way of improving the appearance of cellulite, by reducing the orange peel look.

How does the body probe work?
This is a non-invasive, non-surgical and painless treatment. Moreover, thanks to the Maya technology, the operator can have the complete control over both the depth and the intensity of the treatment.

During this phase the operator will use a special body vacuum, performing a deep massage to the affected areas. The operator will use this strong suction to pull and manipulate the dimpled skin affected by cellulite, increasing in this way the circulation, restoring the collagen function, and helping the body to expel toxins and abnormal water buildup as the connective fibers are stretched.

During this phase the vacuum body probe is used in order to break apart fat deposits that have been compartmentalized in the skin. It is in fact this compartmentalizing that gives cellulite its “orange peel” appearance. The idea is to treat the surface compartments and restore the skin with a smoother less dimpled appearance.

The body probe gives the possibility to the operator to work on the connective tissue, which is a real living material, stimulating the blood and lymph circulation in order to make the fat available for lipolysis or breakdown.

Under the continuous action of the unit, the skin is gently folded and unfolded allowing for smooth and regulated deep tissue mobilization, resulting in the reduction of cellulite and loss of inches. We will also see a reduction of the appearance of the stretch-marks provoked from the incredible exfoliation in conjunction with the stretching of the fibers

What happens in our skin?
The appearance and tone of the skin is mainly connected to the work done by the connective tissue. In fact it is here that we find the fibroblasts, collagen and elastin.

The effectiveness of our method is due to the fact that it acts upon the cutaneous and subcutaneous structures (connective tissues, fatty tissues, vascular and lymphatic circulation). The loss of supple in this area can be connected to different factors; such as, aging, lack of stimulation, weight gain and improper lifestyle which promotes the size increase of the fat cells in this area.

Once we stimulate the tissues with the connective body vacuum massage, we substantially increase the quantity of blood in the skin and in the fat layers just below the skin. This happens thanks to the release and decompression of the different vascular, arterial, venous and lymphatic structure. In this way, we also increase the metabolic processes and the fat cells metabolism.

Moreover stimulating the tissues we accelerate the lymphatic drainage, improving the elimination of waste, toxins and other abnormal water buildup. It is important to notice that, without this special stimulation, they could not be completely removed from our body. Thanks to this method the density of the tissue changes, improving cellular and fluid exchanges.

Finally, thank to this manual stimulation we are able to stretch the connective fibers responsible for the dimpling effect, making them more supple and leaving the skin surface smoother. The stimulated fibroblasts will produce new collagen and elastin.

For what concerns the muscles, thanks to this treatment we are able to stimulate them in an active an passive way, bringing them nutrients and providing resistance training which will result in toned and shaped curves

What are the results?

  • Reduction of cellulite appearance
  • Reduction of “orange peel” appearance
  • Reduction of body circumference
  • Reduction of the water retention
  • Improvement of the blood circulation (about 4 times more blood flowed to the treated area)
  • Improvement of the lymph circulation (about 5 times more lymphatic fluids flowed away)
  • Improvement of the toxins, abnormal water buildup and fatty waste elimination
  • Modification of the body shape
  • Improvement of the lipolisis
  • Reduction of fat cells size

Treatments: how often? how many? how long?

The average number of treatments is two per week (more than two sessions per week will not bring faster results). The recommended average number of treatment is 14. The first results are visible after 6 or 7 sessions. Each session lasts 35 minutes circa. The operator will focus attention on the problematic areas, moreover a complete body treatment will be performed in order to stimulate general circulation and elimination.

Why is it necessary for the client to wear pantyhose during the treatment?
First of all for hygiene. In fact the probe gets in touch directly with the skin and, also if it can be easily sterilized, it is more professional to have personal pantyhose which are used from the client during the treatment cycle.

Secondly because of the fact that the pantyhose help the work of the operator, allowing the body probe to glide in a more easy way over the treated area.

How can the client get faster and better results?
You should recommend your client to undergo a diet and exercise program during the treatment period. We would like to remind you that this is not a slimming equipment, the lose of weight is not one of our goals. Anyway, many clients report being able to lose weight, especially fat weight.

Because of the fact that we are stimulating the lymph circulation, it would be highly recommended for your clients to drink at least two liters of water every day during the treatment period, in order to stimulate natural elimination.

Who can benefit bythe treatment?
It is important to understand that the body probe has not been specifically formulated only for the anti-cellulite treatment. It can be used for tonification, relaxation as well as pain release and to reduce muscular tension. In fact, we can treat a lot of different body areas; such as, stomach, thighs, buttocks, legs, back, etc.

Moreover men and women can benefit from the treatment as well, for reduction of “love handles” and "muffin tops" and to combat loose pectoral tissues.

Combination of the body vacuum with the liposuction
It has been demonstrated that the combination of the body vacuum with liposuction is really useful both before and after. The body vacuum treatment can be used before in order to improve the results which will be achieved.

After liposuction, vacuum massage can be used to reduce the formation of edemas, to eliminate the residual cellulite deposits and to correct any eventual asymmetry.
